The month of May features our favorite nights of the year. Senior Awards Ceremonies at Portland Public High Schools! This year our board members attended ceremonies at McDaniel and Roosevelt High Schools. We awarded a total of 3 x $10,000 scholarships to the top students who applied for a Stumptown Scholars scholarship.
This year we had our most ever applications. 105 students submitted applications from the seven schools we serve. This is more than double the applications for 2023. It helped that this was our first year with an online application. Each year the applications are read and scored by an outstanding, diverse group of volunteers from across Portland, This year the readers commented on how difficult it was to score the applications because there were so many highly qualified applicants.
The applications are scored based on an essay, academic performance, community leadership and financial need.
McDaniel High graduates earned two scholarships. Our board member Melissa Vera-McCoy presented awards to Anika Schramm and Jacqueline Vo. Both students are valedictorians, and both have a long record of community service. Jacqueline Vo also earned the Math Award for McDaniel students. Both Anika and Jacqueline will attend Oregon State in September.
Anika earned the award for outstanding student among the McDaniel, Franklin, Grant & Cleveland cluster. Jacqueline earned the top First Gen (first in her family to go to college) among all seven Eastside schools.
At Roosevelt, Christine Migani scored top among the Roosevelt, Benson & Jefferson cluster. She will be a first-generation college student at Portland State.
Stumptown Scholars is an all-volunteer organization. These significant scholarships are supported by neighbors and small businesses on Portland’s Eastside. We are committed to raising awareness by inviting our neighbors to help support these deserving students and their families. These scholarships frequently help students cross the finish line in paying for college and they help cut down of student debt.
Congratulations to all of the 2024 Stumptown Scholars! We are here for you. And thank you to our many neighborhood donors who make these awards possible.
