Since 2015, we have awarded 43 scholarships totaling $109,000. Stumptown Scholars typically graduate from college within 4 years and go onto a variety of careers and/or graduate schools.
Here is a look at the college students we are currently supporting:
“My father started working at age 14 selling watermelons in Vietnam. I have opportunities here in Oregon that they my parents never had. They see and believe in me as the one who can fulfill the unfinished dreams they left behind. This scholarship helps me pursue my college degree with much less worry about debt and takes a huge burden off my parents. Thank you to everyone for believing in me.”
“This scholarship brings me a step closer to achieving my future goals and illustrates your support through my journey. It also takes a huge burden off my mother who has had trouble finding a full-time job. I hope to pose as an example to other black students dealing with the same stress or tribulations. I really admire the way you aid many other students beside myself each year. Thank you again.”
“Growing up in a family where financial stability has always been a concern, I’ve learned the importance of hard work and resourcefulness. The cost of tuition and textbooks is simply beyond our reach. I have worked part-time jobs throughout high school and have contributed to family finances where possible. This scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies without constant worry about how I will afford the next semester. I am so grateful for your support.”
“Your generous financial aid relieves some of the financial stress experienced by my family as we plan for my college education. This scholarship will make it possible for me to continue on my path for higher education knowing I will have a lot less debt when I graduate college. As someone born and raised in Portland, it means so much knowing that this life-changing support comes directly from my own community.”
“Instead of ending up with crippling student debt, I will be able to focus on my education and future. This scholarship not only helps my family pay for college, it shows me there are countless generous people out there who have my back. I feel optimistic for my future knowing that other people believe in me and my goals.”
“This scholarship will benefit not only me but also my parents. Because of this scholarship they don’t have to worry too much about paying for my college. Plus, they have my 5 younger siblings to look out for. This scholarship takes a big weight off their shoulders.”
“The scholarship has been immensely helpful to my family. This past fall my grandfather passed away. Leading up to his passing and after, my mom had to take a lot of time off of work to take care of him. The scholarship helped alleviate the financial burden of my tuition during this time. Thank you so much Stumptown Scholars”
“The scholarship I received has been truly transformative. It has alleviated the financial burden associated with pursuing higher education and allowed me to fully immerse myself in studies. The support provided by the scholarship has not only enabled me to access valuable resources and opportunities but has also instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and motivation to give back to the community in the future.”
“Getting this scholarship was huge for me. It meant that I could consider living on campus my first year, rather than in my car or in a hostel. This scholarship lifts the financial burden off my family In short, getting this scholarship has opened up a lot more opportunities for me”.
“This scholarship was a crucial factor to my academic success at the University of Oregon! The Stumptown Scholarship provided me with a brand new MacBook that allowed me to attend online classes and I still make use of it today! This scholarship helps take the load off my tuition fees every year meaning less hours spent working and more hours spent focusing on my academics”.
